What’s Weighing on You?
Sara Adams - Liscensed Access Facilitator in Houston, Texas
Imagine every judgment you have of your body carries a certain amount of weight. You can literally weigh yourself down with the judgments you pile on every time you step on a scale, look in a mirror or catch your reflection in passing. If you’re not gleefully acknowledging your body and thanking it for all the things it does for you, chances are you are feeding it a never-ending buffet of complaints, disappointments and judgments. If you have ever been on a diet, you already know that most of them focus on what you have to give up or leave out in order to achieve your weight loss goals.
What if you gave up judging you? What type of changes could occur if you are grateful for the body you currently have? It may be that you’re so used to judging your body that you don’t even know when you’re doing it. So make a twist on a popular diet—instead of keeping a food diary where you write down everything that you put in your mouth, take notice when you hear a criticism that comes out of your mouth. Even if you don’t say it out loud, negative thoughts and judgments can still weigh you down. Chances are, you’re unaware of just how often and how severe your projections have been. They are the white noise of your daily life and if you can acknowledge it, you can let it go. Any time you catch yourself; apologize to your body and promise to do better next time. Be kind to you and your body.
A friend of mine suggested a way to get out of the habit of communicating negatively with our bodies is to begin each day with a question. Before you get out of bed ask, “How are you today, body?” Then simply hold your face in your hands for about two minutes and feel the connection you can generate between your body and you. Your body loves you to acknowledge it. If you are willing to gently be with it, a wonderful expansion can be created for the rest of the day.
How can I know if this will work for me? Did this information make you feel heavy or light? If it makes you feel lighter it’s true for you and if it makes you feel heavy, it’s a lie. Judgments and lies can make us heavy. What would it take to let go of all the judgments and lies we have locked in our body?
